"We must celebrate your engagement, Shane, "Serene Filan insisted, clasping her hands. "There's a bottle of champagne on ice in the kitchen. Be a dear boy and fetch it. "You think of everything nana," he laughed as he rose to do her bidding. The moment he left the room ,Mrs Filan turned her attention to Alice, "My dear, I've waited so long for Shane to take a wife, and I was beginning to despair that I would never have the pleasure of knowing my grand -daughter-in-law." Mrs Filan, I - " "I know I haven't long to live, Alice," Serene Filan interrupted calmly. Knowing this made more important f or me to see my grandson married before I go. You may think me an extremely silly old woman, but-" I understand, Mrs Filan. "Alice interrupted. Shane came in at the moment with the bottle of champagne and three glasses on a tray, and they lapsed silence as he placed if on a low table close to the sofa. Serene Filan's steady glance never wavered as she nodded her approval. "I think I'm going to like you Alice, and you must come and visit me whenever you have time off the work." "Your champagne , Nana," said Shane placing her glass in her hand, then drawing Alice to her feet, he picked up the two remaining glasses and handed her one before slipping his arms about her waist. "To us," he said, touching the side of his glass to hers. Sister Johnson marched in a few minutes later. It's time you were in bed. Shane said gently, "You've met Alice, and you've had your champagne. Now it's time you went to bed. "Shane help her to her feet. "Goodnight Shane and you, Alice." She extended a hand. When Bruce arrived in Alice flat- "You have news for me," he said . "I can see it written all over your face." "Yes, I have news for you, "Alice admitted. "Don't tell me Aunt Irene has changed her mind !" No, she hasn't. Alice laugh, but I've managed to obtain the money elsewhere. "From whom ?" Bruce asked, "From, my-my fiance. "From your what ?" Bruce exclaimed in surprise. "From my fiance, "Alice repeated. That's the other item of news I have for you. I'm going to be married in three weeks time. "I don't believe you !" As she poured the coffee, almost spilling some into a saucer as a deep voice directly behind her said : "Need any help ?" She glanced over her shoulder. "No, thanks. I was just about to bring the tray throught. "Shane's arms came round her, preventing her from lifting the tray and turning her to face him. She tensed inwardly, aware of his warm hands circling her waist. I think your brother wasn't convinced. "What are we going to do ?" she asked. I'm not too sure," said Shane. "Can he see us from your lounge ? "she glanced swiftly in that direction. "Yes, and he's looking this way. "Hm…I think we might convince him. "Her breath locked in her throat as he drew her into a close embrace. "Shane-" Put your arms around my neck, he whispered, his lips against her ear, his lean check hard and warm against her own. "But I - " His lips against her ear sent little shivers down her spine, but her hand somehow touched the back of his head. She never dreamed she would ever find herself in, to be held in Shane Filan arms.
