Going the distance

Sometimes we have no choice but to live apart from our partner. Whether it’s an online relationship that blossomed into something more, or it’s work or family commitments that keeps the lovebirds separated, many modern couples have to cope with keeping the love alive over long distances.

It takes time, energy and commitment to make any relationship work, but when your main squeeze lives hundreds or thousands of kilometres away, it can be even more difficult to keep the spark alive. “Long-distance loving has its challenges, but also its wonderful rewards,” says author, sex therapist and sex researcher Dr Gabrielle Morrissey. If you’re looking for ways to spice up your long-range relationship, try these long distance relationship tips on for size:

Maintain frequent contact
There’s a fine line between becoming a stalker and remain in regular contact, but rememeber that it’s important to stay involved in each other’s lives. Calling your other half 15 times a day could be overkill, but the information age has gifted us with plenty of ways to communicate, so take advantage of skype, SMS, email, post cards and instant messenger.
Schedule regular visits
A little time apart in a relationship is one thing, but making a long-distance relationship work is another thing altogether. Seeing each other at regular intervals will help you maintain intimacy and closeness that you just can’t get via the phone or internet.
Arouse the senses
On your next visit, leave behind an item of clothing scented with your signature perfume or cologne. Hide it somewhere, and then send your partner a text message telling them where they can find it.
Plan ahead
Decide in advance how you will celebrate special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. It’s important to set and explain your expectations upfront, so neither of you become disappointed or resentful.
Stay social
Just because your partner’s away, doesn’t mean you have to become a social hermit! Rather than pining for the one you love, hang out with friends, socialise after work, and continue to enjoy your hobbies.
Return to snail mail
Send each other hand-written letters. They don’t need to be epic love letters; a simple note explaining how much you miss and love your lover will make their day. You can also send small, thoughtful gifts to let them know you’re thinking of them.
